Jacob Riis – An Energetic Gentleman

Jacob August Riis emigrated from Denmark to America in 1870, when he was 21, seeking employment as a carpenter. He died in 1914 a personal friend of the president, Theodore Roosevelt. Prof. Hasia Diner and Dr. Robert Cohen discuss ways for teachers to contextualize Jacob Riis’ photographs when teaching American immigration history.
